2011 Chevrolet Orlando Details
Chevrolet Orlando
GM says Orlando's interior can easily be configured for passengers or cargo.

Though details remain sketchy, we understand that Chevy's Orlando, regardless of final destination, could be built at GM's Hamtramck plant in greater Detroit. The Chevrolet brand is quickly expanding in Europe and other world-wide markets, so it makes sense that GM marketers want a different version of the hot-selling Opel Zafira to sell under the now global bowtie brand. UAW members must be delighted at the prospect of so much steady work. And they're bound to stay busy even if the Orlando isn't sold at home.

Hard news about the vehicle itself is scant, but we can make a few educated guesses. For starters, the 2011 Chevrolet Orlando won't stray far from the original design's popular formula. That means a tall-body wagon with 4 conventional side doors, a rear liftgate, and GM's three-row "Flex-7" seating. The design will likely bring modest dimensional increases compared to the Opel original, making overall size a close match for the Kia Rondo and Mazda 5. Like those rivals, the Orlando shares engineering DNA with a front-wheel-drive passenger car, but optional all-wheel drive, sans low-range gearing, is a possibility. A V6 is less likely. Indeed, the 2011 Chevrolet Orlando will probably be limited to GM's global "Ecotec" 4-cylinder engine family. That makes sense in light of unstable gas prices for consumers and tough new fuel-economy mandates for automakers. A 4- or 5-speed automatic may be the sole transmission for the U.S., though a 6-speeder is possible. So is a sporty model with standard 6-speed manual transmission.

Like other mainstream GM products, every 2011 Chevrolet Orlando should include antilock brakes, traction control, front side airbags, and curtain side airbags. Standard wheels are likely to be 16-inchers attached to front and rear independent suspensions; 17- and maybe 18-inch rims should be available. Other options would likely be family-focused features such as antiskid control, navigation system, iPod/MP3 connectivity, and rear DVD entertainment.

Expect a somewhat bolder appearance versus earlier Euro-market models, so the 2011 Chevrolet Orlando uses traditional SUV styling cues, thus breaking from the pattern set by the Kia Rondo and Mazda 5. Chevy marketers will probably position their new baby as a crossover wagon for budget-minded young families and steer clear of any words suggesting "minivan" and the dreaded "soccer mom" baggage.

A Notable Feature of the 2011 Chevrolet Orlando

GM's "Flex-7" seating package was quite novel back in 2001, with some observers deeming it a major factor in the Zafira's strong Euro-market sales. Though other automakers have since copied it, Flex-7 is likely to carry on as standard for the 2011 Chevrolet Orlando. It's a 2-3-2 configuration with a third-row bench seat that folds into the cargo floor and a second-row bench split 40/20/40. Each of the latter's sections slide fore and aft and also fold flat to form a level load deck with the lowered third-row seat. The second-row's outboard backrests recline as well, and the slim center section is designed for use with a child safety seat. A fold-flat front-passenger seat completes the package. The 2011 Chevrolet Orlando may also offer the Opel's optional panoramic roof with four fixed "skylights" and interior roof storage compartments. It's similar to the "SkyView roof" available on Nissan's large Quest minivan.

2011 Chevrolet Orlando Review and Prices

Consumer Guide's Impressions of the 2011 Chevrolet Orlando

Update 05.10.2010

General Motors recently announced the company will not sell the upcoming Chevrolet Orlando in the United States. Media reports indicate Orlando will still be sold in many markets including Canada, Europe, and Asia.

Call it a mini-minivan, a tall compact wagon, or a small crossover SUV, but Chevrolet is cooking up a 7-seat people mover that could help many families cope with rising gas prices and not cramp their lifestyle.

What We Know About the 2011 Chevrolet Orlando

Minivans aren't as "mini" as they used to be--nor as popular either. Yet smaller models have been a virtual no-sale in these United States. Remember the Nissan Axxess, Mitsubishi Expo and Mazda MPV? We thought not.

Things are different in Europe, where consumers love the compact people movers generally termed monocabs, multi-purpose vehicles, or MPVs (sorry, Mazda). Among the most popular of these popular mini-minivans is General Motors' 7-seat Opel/Vauxhall Zafira, which is also sold in Brazil under the Chevrolet banner.

The Zafira was introduced back in 2001 and heavily updated in '05. A face-lifted version with additional powertrain choices hit European dealers in February 2008. But here's the kicker. As part of GM's contract with the United Auto Workers, a variant of an upcoming redesigned Zafira may be built in the U.S. and could be sold here starting in 2011 as an addition to the Chevy lineup. Dubbed Orlando, the new Chevy version will have bolder styling than its Opel cousin, but the basic layout will closely mirror the Zafira. The 2011 Chevrolet Orlando will likely be marketed as a thrifty compact crossover SUV, not a small minivan. It's the same approach used for the only other such vehicles on the American scene, the Mazda 5 and Kia Rondo.

Reports say the new Chevy people mover, codenamed MPV-7, will be based on GM's new front-wheel drive Global Compact Vehicle Architecture that is also known as "Delta 2." This is the same platform that underpins the upcoming 2011 Chevrolet Cruze and 2011 Chevrolet Volt. The next-generation Opel/Vauxhall Astra is also expected to be built on the Delta 2 platform. The 2011 Chevrolet Orlando made its debut at the 2008 Paris Auto Show in early October, the same show where the Chevrolet Cruze debuted.

The 2011 Chevrolet Orlando will slot beneath Chevy's Traverse, a midsize crossover sharing GM's Lambda platform with the BuickEnclave, GMC Acadia and Saturn Outlook, and the Chevrolet Equinox. Where the current Chevy HHR fits into this picture is unknown. Elsewhere, the new Chevrolet Orlando will likely replace the current Daewoo-based Chevy Tacuma.
